How to Compress a GIF on Windows

Oct 27, 2026

You can compress an animated GIF on Windows directly in a modern browser. No desktop editor or command-line tool is required.

Compress a GIF on Windows in five steps

  1. Open the GIF Compressor in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox.
  2. Select Choose GIF files.
  3. Pick the animation from File Explorer.
  4. Choose Balanced, Best quality, or Smallest file.
  5. Compress and download the optimized GIF.

Processing happens locally with WebAssembly, so the GIF does not need to be uploaded to a remote server.

Choose the right preset

  • Best quality: detailed graphics, screen recordings, and text.
  • Balanced: most GIF animations and general sharing.
  • Smallest file: strict upload limits and lightweight previews.

Compress several GIFs on Windows

Use the Bulk GIF Compressor to select multiple files from File Explorer and apply one shared preset.

Reach a specific file size

Use Compress GIF to 10MB or Compress GIF to 1MB when a website or application requires a fixed maximum size.

Where Windows saves the compressed GIF

The browser normally saves the result in your Downloads folder unless you changed the download location in browser settings. Your original GIF remains unchanged.
